TITLE IX & SEXUAL MISCONDUCT: Awareness, Prevention, and Recourse
This course is designed to move beyond policy compliance and toward real community care. Facilitated by the Office of Civil Rights Compliance & Accessibility (CRCA), the course works to frames sexual misconduct and harassment not just as legal matters, but as issues that impact how we live, learn, and lead at FIU.
Participants will explore:
• The roles and responsibilities of FIU community members under Title IX, Regulation 105, and other key federal protections.
• The distinctions between Title IX sexual harassment and non-Title IX sexual misconduct, including how context, severity, and jurisdiction shape response.
• Real-life scenarios that challenge attendees to consider power, consent, silence, and misinterpretation in everyday interactions.
• The consent continuum, including how to recognize hesitance, coercion, or incapacity — and how to check in respectfully.
• The importance of mandated reporting and the ethical imperative of becoming an upstander in moments of discomfort or potential harm.
Attendees will leave with a deeper understanding of:
• Their rights under the law
• Their responsibilities as students, staff, or faculty
• The resources available to support them or others impacted
• And most importantly, how to navigate challenging moments in ways that protect people, preserve trust, and uphold the values of the FIU community
Whether you’re new to FIU or a returning Panther, this session invites reflection, clarity, and a renewed commitment to a culture of safety, accountability, and belonging.
