DISABILITY IN FOCUS: Best Practices for Accessible Programming at FIU

This course equips FIU faculty, staff, and event organizers with the tools to create programs and services that meet the standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and FIU policy. Led by the Office of Civil Rights Compliance & Accessibility (CRCA), this session emphasizes practical steps to remove barriers, design inclusive events, and respond to accommodation requests with care and professionalism.

Participants will:

  • Understand the protections afforded via Federal laws and institutional policies
  • Identify accessibility requirements for events, venues, and materials
  • Apply principles of inclusive presentation design (fonts, contrast, alt text, captioning)
  • Learn how to provide accessible printed materials and alternate formats
  • Practice responding effectively to accommodation requests, including last-minute needs
  • Become familiar with FIU’s Event Accessibility Policy (FIU Policy 1705.023) and CRCA support

Ideal for event planners, staff, faculty, administrators, and any FIU community members responsible for public-facing programs or events.
